Sunday Next Before Advent - Christ the King

STIR up, we beseech thee, O Lord, the wills of thy faithful people; that they, plenteously bringing forth the fruit of good works, may of thee be plenteously rewarded; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

And they said to him...

When did we see you hungry?

Do you remember when I first played football for the school and I was desperate for you to come and watch...when I grew  a beard and needed your approval...when I yearned for encouragement and acceptance? That's when.

When did we see you thirsty?

Do you remember when I really wanted to know more about our family history from you...when I asked you to teach me the guitar...when sometimes I just wanted you to hold me tight? That's when.

When did we see you a stranger?

Do you remember when I was new to the area...when I was a friendless refugee...when I started at my new school...when you found out that I was brought up differently from everyone else? That's when.

When did we see you naked?

Do you remember when my business collapsed...when I failed my exam...when I was publicly accused of theft...when I broke down under the strain? That's when.

When did we see you sick?

Do you remember when I was worried to distraction about my daughter...when they laid me off work and I ended up on the dole...when my mother died and I was inconsolable? That's when.

When did we see you in prison?

Do you remember when I felt trapped in the home and needed someone to mind the children...when after a divorce I was so alone...when guilt seemed to overpower me...when I borrowed and got into debt...when drink ruled my life? That's when.

It's the little things that count.

As a shepherd keeps his flock in view

when he stands up

in the middle of his scattered sheep,

so shall I keep my sheep in view.

(Ezekiel 34:12)

If Christ really is King then all creation is subject to him. As citizens of his kingdom, sheep of his flock, we are led by him to a better way of life, to better pastures. There is no evil that might threaten our world or our lives that can ever overthrow his kingship.

IN THE PARABLE of the sheep and the goats, Christ issues a warning in love. It is not a prescription but a description. ... A description is a picture of the way things are, or will be. … Therefore judgment reveals what has long been true. (Richard Hoefler)

THE WHOLE IDEA OF COMPASSION is based on a keen awareness of the interdependence of all these living beings, which are all part of one another, and all involved in one another. (Thomas Merton)
